grew at a slower pace in April despite a coronavirus-induced low base last year, with the slowdown of imports further accelerating, adding to the uncertainties over the post-Covid economic by 8.5 per cent last month from a year earlier to US$295.42 billion, down from a surprising\u00a0<span class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" title=\"\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"81748c13-fbc3-4bae-9949-86024801ab9a\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3219876\/china-trade-export-growth-accelerates-april-fall-imports-deepens-further?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">14.8 per cent increase in March,<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0according to data released by China Customs on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">Imports, meanwhile, fell short of expectations and shrank by 7.9 per cent in April from a year earlier to US$205.21 billion, down further from a fall of 1.4 per cent in March, amid weak demand and lower commodity prices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<div id=\"Blockquote\" class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--blockquote-quote content--blockquote-quote blockquote\" data-v-48603cef=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\u201cIt seems increasingly clear that the global economic slowdown is weighing on China\u2019s exports,\u201d said Iris Pang, chief economist for Greater China at ING.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lazyload-component\" data-v-1854add0=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<div data-v-1854add0=\"\">\n<div data-v-1854add0=\"\">\n<div class=\"details__body body body--next\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<div class=\"paywalled-content\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\u201cFalling imports \u2013 an input for future exports \u2013 suggest that a further deterioration of exports in the coming months is highly likely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\u201cIt is looking more likely that, in response, the government will step in to support the manufacturing sector\u2019s labour market through fiscal stimulus.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">The weak trade data is consistent with April\u2019s official manufacturing purchasing managers\u2019 index, which\u00a0<span class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" title=\"\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"39e05879-23f6-4991-b301-a63c841be1cf\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3215489\/chinas-factory-activity-growth-slowed-march-economy-still-showing-signs-recovery?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article&amp;module=inline&amp;pgtype=article&amp;module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">fell to 49.2<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0having remained above the 50-point mark separating expansion and contraction for the first three data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"dcb1f98f-4b77-42c3-affe-c6e8c5b37e69\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3217917\/china-trade-data-points-accelerated-supply-chain-relocation-despite-rebound-march-exports?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article&amp;module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">the so-called processing trade,<\/span><\/a><\/span> said Zhang Zhiwei, chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div top priority for the government is to reduce the unemployment rate, in our view,\u201d he added after the jobless rate among those aged 16-24 climbed to 19.6 per cent in March, while the overall unemployment rate\u00a0<span class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" title=\"\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"17c43797-7f06-416c-9331-a354ed71450d\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3217391\/china-gdp-economy-grew-45-cent-first-quarter-amid-recovery-drive?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article&amp;module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">dipped slightly to 5.3 per cent<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body monthly basis, exports fell by 6.4 per cent and imports fell by 9.7 per cent in April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">Economists from Goldman Sachs said the sequential decline in exports is in line with historical patterns for this year\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" title=\"\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"b1b4f755-61b2-4c83-9fb6-5b3892a688c2\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3212623\/china-trade-exports-imports-continue-decline-combined-january-february-data?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">earlier-than-normal Lunar New Year,<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0as pent-up orders during the holiday were released in March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<div class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--div content--div scmp-code-block methode-html-wrapper\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<div id=\"datawrapper-chart-HTVaQ\" class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--iframe content--iframe\" title=\"China's youth unemployment rate (16-24)\" March\u2019s increase after accounting for seasonality and changes in export prices, said economists from Capital Economics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\"><\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\u201cThis suggests that global demand for Chinese goods remains weak and supports our view that the jump in March had more to do with distortions to the customs data rather than a genuine turnaround,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">Capital Economics also said \u201cexports will decline further before bottoming out later this year\u201d given the gloomy outlook for external demand, while the rebound in domestic demand following China\u2019s reopening will drive a recovery in imports over the coming months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\u201cIt is possible that the reopening boost to domestic demand was smaller than expected, as many consumer-facing services are not import-intensive,\u201d the economists from Capital Economics added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\u201cWhat\u2019s more, there is still some scope for further gains in fuel demand as international travel\u00a0<span class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" title=\"\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"505b15be-3d7b-4cfb-97d1-5d2d37b180f8\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3217478\/chinas-sluggish-overseas-flights-create-worrying-trend-amid-us-europe-tensions?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">in and out of China continues to recover.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">To support economic recovery,\u00a0<span class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--a content--a\" title=\"\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-entity-uuid=\"d0faea61-6d67-461c-9fb4-6899bf7198a6\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3216405\/china-targets-exporters-help-rocky-road-economic-recovery?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\"><span class=\"text\" data-v-03dbdbc7=\"\">Beijing has pledged to stabilise trade<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0with developed countries, while also exploring new possibilities with emerging economies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">Exports to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, China\u2019s largest trade partner, rose by 4.49 per cent in April, year on year, while imports declined by 6.25 per cent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">Exports to the European Union also continued to grow in April, increasing by 3.87 per cent, year on year, while imports from the bloc fell by 0.12 per cent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-3ea23604=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e5d603e4=\"\" data-v-3ea23604=\"\">Shipments to the US, though, fell by 6.5 per cent in April compared with the same period last year.
